Summer Reading

Please Share on Your Listservs“Find A Book, Kansas” for Summer Reading!

During the summer months, the challenge of keeping students reading sometimes increases. Research has shown that students who do not read consistently over the summer can lose momentum in maintaining the progress they made during the school year; this phenomenon is known as “summer slide.”

To encourage children and families to read independently throughout the summer, MetaMetrics—an educational research group—offers the FREE, research-based tool “Find a Book, Kansas” to help students create a personalized reading list and then locate those books at the nearest library or bookseller.

With Lexile measures for students now being included in score reports from the Kansas Assessments, this is a perfect opportunity to make these results more actionable and connect with resources to fuel additional student learning.

Are Your Students Ready for a Summer Math Challenge?

Did you know that on average students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math skills over the summer months?

To help remedy the summer math slide, MetaMetrics—an educational research group—offers the FREE Summer Math Challenge, a math skills maintenance program based on grade-level standards that help prepare students for college and careers. The program is targeted to students who have just completed first through eighth grades and is designed to help kids retain math skills learned during the previous school year.

With Quantile measures for students now being included in score reports from the Kansas Assessments, this is a perfect opportunity to make these results more actionable and connect with resources to fuel additional student learning.

The Summer Math Challenge begins Monday, June 18, and runs until Friday, July 27As part of the program, parents receive daily emails with fun activities and links to educational resources.
