Dear Parents,

Here at St. Matthew Catholic Church, I am introducing a training program for our young people in grades 5-12 to serve at the Altar of our Lord during the celebration of Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation as a ministry to the parish. 

This is a ministry that requires conscientious commitment on your part and on the part of your child.  Serving at the Altar of our Lord is not a right, but rather, a privilege extended by the pastor.  The ministry will bear many responsibilities:  proper training, attention and participation in the prayers at Holy Mass, showing up for scheduled duties, as well as securing a replacement server in the case of an absence.

For those interested, I ask that you discuss this ministry with your child.  Both parents and children need to be aware of and accept the responsibilities and obligations of this ministry.

We will soon begin training sessions in which students will be instructed on the appropriate way to dress for serving and the proper decorum, posture, participation (singing, responses in the Mass, etc.), and procedures for serving well. Those students who will be serving need to know the prayers and their responses so that they may actively and properly participate in the worship of our Lord at Holy Mass.

Please note that at least one parent or legal guardian must attend the training with their child; and ALL students must attend this training even if they have attended training in the past.
